I’ve been making a variety of drive safe keychains for several years now. This one is probably the most wordy, but it definitely covers all the bases: Drive Safe because I fucking love you.

Drive Safe Because I Fucking Love you – available with a heart or a dash instead of all the letters, if you prefer.

Three Varieties of Keychain

I have three varieties of this keychain – the unedited version, and one with a little heart replacing the ‘uc’ in that -ing word. All are handmade from kiln-fired copper. All are available here.

Four Types of People

I often listen to podcasts when I’m working, including Happier with Gretchen Rubin. According to her research, people can be divided into four categories, based on how they react to inner and outer expectation. The categories are: upholders, obligers, questioners and rebels.

Upholders are rare. They probably are the ones telling their peers to be safe.

Obligers have a hard time doing things just because they want to, but are highly motivated to meet external expectations.

Questioners have to understand the why behind everything. If the why makes sense, they can meet both inner and outer expectations. But without a satisfactory why, forget it.

Rebels can do anything they want to do – but they have to want it. They don’t meet external obligations until and unless they can fit it into their definition of themselves.

Me? I’m a rebellious questioner, or perhaps a questioning rebel.

My point with this is: I think the Drive safe because I fucking love you message is perfect for all four types of people.

Upholders were probably going to be safe anyway – but who doesn’t want to hear that they are really loved?

Obligers need to be reminded of how important they are to other people.

Questioners need to realize it isn’t just an arbitrary rule like a speed limit that is important – it is important to be around for the people who love you.

And rebels…even rebels can concede that, most likely, in their heart of hearts, they really fucking love you, too. The “because I love you” softens what might otherwise sound like a command they must, well, rebel against!
