hamsa pendant

Hamsa pendant in kiln-fired copper.

I created this hamsa pendant as a symbol of protection. I had never really noticed the hamsa until a solo trip to Spain in 2009. The Hand of Hamsa is found throughout the many cultures and religions that thrived in Spain over the centuries. Sometimes it is called the Hand of Miriam, the Hand of Fatima, or the Hand of Mary, but it is always an open hand, warding off the evil eye. Interestingly, it is always a female hand, although I made my version more rustic in keeping with the idea that this symbol truly is ancient.

My hamsa pendant necklace is available on Etsy by gogoshebogo.
